A Pledge

I will clench onto her hands, like a lost child who has been found.

I will gaze at her face so intently till a crimson colour seeps into her veins, and races towards her cheeks.

I will draw that other half of her smile, the one she once lost among a sea of strangers.

I will fold my hands and turn it into a boat when she drowns.

I will draw a sun on days they don’t shine for her.

I will always be at the corner of her mind having a smoke puffing its wisps blurring out every other stranger trying to seduce her.

I will kiss her tears and promise to be her guardian angel for eternity.

I will hold her hand and play Hide & Seek with her demons till they are afraid of my light.

I will keep painting her into existence with my raw words that would cause every painting in museums fall to the ground and die of shame.

I will compose words in her presence, for they dress in notes every time she comes near.

I will learn how to play the violin, just to fathom a language her heart speaks.

I will tell her to listen carefully, for the stars sigh in unison every time her lips part.

I will be the trapped sunlight, giving a glimmer to her eyes.

I will sway her body with mine under a downpour of rain, and we will outstretch the night sky as we fill it with our dreams.

I will make her laugh her heart out till she feels her soul is in tears.

I will make her smile in a way I can see the years drop silently from her face.

I will make her blush every day forever and leave people wondering why her cheeks are permanently red.

I will caress her hair at the break of dawn, and at the onset of darkness, for it is eternally strewn all over my skies.

I will guard her solitude, her pillow fortress, and bid her farewell as she drowns beneath the sheets.

I will find us a suitcase, and we’ll cram all the worlds that we co-create.

I will build her a bridge made of words so that she’ll reach her forgotten dreams.

I will pour her a glass of red wine, and wait for it to fall drunk once pressed against her voluptuous lips.

I will weave her seamless wings, and she’ll teach me what’s it like to fly.

I will overwhelm her with every thought, till she hears our bones crush, till our souls coincide.

I will write her something to hold onto, and she will unfold it like she is about to read an invitation to slip into outer space.

I will write her, and she will read me, till language falls in love with us all over again.

I will never ask love from her, but I will always love her silently and wait timelessly.

I will wait for her at her doorstep forever without ever knocking her door.

I will wait for her till the last train leaves, till the stars die, till there is no time left.

I will love her harder than the last lifetime, by making her feel alive and her feet won’t touch the ground.

I will love her beyond lifetimes through millennia of being trapped in an infinite time loop, by showing her what it feels like to be the supernova among countless tiny stars in galaxies.

I will adore her endlessly, and there is no poetry more beautiful than that, and this is only the first of my pledges to her.

    Dear Mugilan raju,

What an exhaustive pledge, superbly crafted with love.

What a long list of comments, equally beautiful responses.

From in between your beautiful lines, I understand that you are in love but haven’t yet found your heart throb, because you are ready to wait without knocking at her door.

And all your lines are about ‘I promise her’ instead of ‘I promise you’

And when you really find her, you will have to add a few more lines, because she may not be convinced with your verses about being a glimmer or a boat, but would expect something practical.

    For eg.,
I will help you in the household chores.

I will love your parents as mine.

I will give you economic independence.

When you really find her, you will forget these verses being enveloped in the verses of her arms.

Best wishes. I thoroughly loved your poem.

That is so touching. Every line was filled with hope and raw, loving emotion. It is your pledge to offer all that you are to the one you love, and it could easily become a new standard for wedding vows. You did an absolutely excellent job in writing this, young man!

There is a wonderful person in my life who enriches my life more than I can say. She is courteous and kind and always gives her full attention to who she’s with. She is someone who gives light and life to all those around her. I fall in love a little more each day when I see the difference she makes simply by being who she is. I am thankful for her friendship and look forward to many more years of it, even if I would like to be more than friends.

Thank you so much for sharing this masterpiece of emotion and imagery. β™₯
